With the long awaited return of Doctor Who to our screens now almost in sight, the show returning this Christmas Day for the yet untitled Christmas Special, news and rumours have already started to do the rounds on the upcoming episode, with both the return of a fan favourite and a special debut both on the cards.
The Radio Times reports that Pearl Mackie, who will play Bill in the forthcoming Series 10, has already begun filming scenes for the show which feature both fake snow and the actress in winter clothing. Whether this indicates Pearl will be having a cameo in the special or a full fledged role isn’t known, yet both Steven Moffat and Peter Capaldi have gone on record to state that Bill won’t debut until the first episode of Series 11…. though, remember Jenna Coleman. Moffat has form!

On related news, the companion role for the special is likely to be taken by Matt Lucas, who is confirmed as reprising his role of Nardole from last years The Husbands of River Song, potentially making this year’s special a sequel of some kind to last year’s episode.

Steven Moffat meanwhile set tongue’s wagging when he spoke to BBC’s Newsbeat earlier this week, saying:
“We’ve just started working on the Christmas episode. It’s got a lot of heart, but it’s got a lot of brain too. Figure that one out.”
Fan’s have speculated online that The Moff is referring to the events of last Christmas where King Hydroflax used several heads as part of his robot body, Nardole being mysteriously whole when Lucas has been on set. Other early speculation includes “lot of heart” referring to the Timelords, a sequel to the Brain of Morbius or even the return of Missy.
Could the special also see a cameo from Jenna Coleman? Peter Capaldi let slip this past June that he’d “shot something with Clara still in there” when talking about Clara wiping the Doctor’s memories. Whether this is for the series, a minisode, or the special.. we can only wonder!
