Steven Moffat has spoken out on claims from some quarters that Peter Capaldi is too old for the role of the Doctor when he makes his debut this Christmas, replacing Matt Smith. Capaldi, 55, will be as old as the first Doctor William Hartnell was when he debuted in An Unearthly Child in 1963. Speaking at a Radio Times sponsored event in October, The Moff went on record to say:
“There’s a lot of talk about kids will not understand an older Doctor, let’s just get a couple of nonsenses out of the way. One: how many young Santa Clauses have you seen? And two: do you think to an eight-year-old Matt Smith looks young? I was a school teacher at the age of 24, which is even younger than the lovely Mr Smith, and they all thought I was ancient…”
Moffat went on to say that despite the widely differing ages and characteristics of the doctor through his lives, he is at the core the same character
“That’s the important thing to remember about the Doctor – it’s one character going through his life played by a succession of different actors and you have to get to that place each time, I can absolutely believe that the strange old-young Matt Smith will turn into the strange young-old Peter Capaldi.”
Peter Capaldi is scheduled to make his debut this Christmas Day in the annual Doctor Who Christmas Special which will be written by Steven Moffat.
