The 50th Anniversary features Matt Smith, David Tennant and a mysterious incarnation played by John Hurt. Only one appears in the mini episode, The Night Of The Doctor. But which?
Speculation is beginning as to what exactly The Night of the Doctor will entail. Besides the inevitable Paul McGann cameo rumours, there are a few assumptions we may be able to make. The official BBFC details state there are:
“Scenes of mild violence, including attacks on a city and its residents, as well as scenes of threat from attacking forces.”
It may be safe to assume then that the Minisode features the John Hurt incarnation of the Doctor and is set during the Time War given the scenes we’ve already see in the two trailers this past week.
And then there’s this, Tweeted yesterday by the official Doctor Who Twitter
The Bringer of Darkness, the Oncoming Storm, the Doctor, the Warrior - A Time Lord!
Given the red robes and links to Gallifrey many have speculated that the image features the Sisterhood of Khan from 1976s The Brain of Morbius
The Sisterhood of Karn
The Sisterhood of Karn were a female society dedicated to protecting the Sacred Flame, which produced the Elixir of Life. When the Sacred Flame appeared to be dying, the Sisterhood suspected the Fourth Doctor of trying to steal the remaining Elixir, but later helped him defeat the renegade Time Lord Morbius. Morbius’s ambition led him to become the head of the High Council of Time Lords. His warlike nature led him to urge the Time Lords toward a policy of conquest. While based on Gallifrey, Morbius formed a personal army of mercenaries, bought by his promises of time travel and immortality. His following came to be known as the Cult of Morbius.
However, the people in the image are not wearing the very distinctive make-up of the Sisterhood and the robes are markedly different, yet Steven Moffat has never shied away from updating the look of classic series returnees.
There is also speculation that the woman pictured may be actress Gillian Brown who played one of the Sisterhood - Ohica in The Brain of Morbius
Yet there are other possibilities. The scenes of “the moment” in the trailer appear to take place outside the Capitol and John Hurt is seen in the wilds of Gallifrey, could these people be Shabogans?
Any of course red robes are not unusual on Gallifrey
And there are similar robes in the trailer
But if the Sisterhood of Karn have returned to Doctor Who, could it tie to the impending regeneration of Matt Smith? Silence falling and rumours that the Smith incarnation is actually the last incarnation of the Doctor? After all, Clara saw no future Doctors in the time stream. Steven Moffat has said that The Day of the Doctor will ensure the next 50 years of the show, Peter Davison also stating that the regenerations issue will be sorted. Could the elixir of life come into play?
Just as we thought we were getting some idea of what was going to happen, new questions are raised. Damn you Moffat!
