Director Ben Wheatley has spoken out on the new style for Series 8 and calls it a return to classic Who in an interview with Empire Magazine.
The Field in England director who takes charge for the first two episodes of the forthcoming series, including the feature length premiere Deep Breath, said that long story arcs were a thing of the past:
“For me, they’re back to classic Who, or the mid-Tennant adventures, where you’d tell a story and move on to the next one, less tied up in the final machinations of long plot arcs.”
And he went further with the Classic Series comparisons, comparing leading man Peter Capaldi to some of the greats of the series:
“Capaldi’s his own man but there are elements of Baker and Troughton and Pertwee. He’s inherently funny but inherently brooding and complicated, as a performer and a man.”
