David Tennant has a given a brand new online interview, speaking on a range of topics from his latest endeavour with Fireman Sam, to politics and the future of Doctor Who.
Speaking with Chloe Hamilton of The iPaper, David refused to be drawn on who he thinks should be the next Doctor or whether the role should go to a woman:
“A toxic question. It’s a lovely opportunity for whoever gets it, and I am jealous of someone starting out on that journey because it’s a real trip. I mean, it’s bonkers, but it’s not like anything else.”
Tennant also suggested Broadchurch co-star Olivia Colman would be unable to take the role, saying the star “probably has other things to do.”
And on his latest venture, Fireman Sam: Alien Alert, where he plays “unscrupulous” Buck Douglas, David said he’s always loved animation:
“I’m so fascinated by animation, it does feel kind of magical. I’m sure that’s part of why we love it, particularly as children, but throughout our life it is a magic, it is an alchemy.”
David also reaffirmed his commitment to Labour politics following this past week’s British General Election:
“I’m a fan of the Labour Party… I don’t understand how you can’t think about society as a whole, how you can’t understand that we all have responsibilities for each other and that we have to look out for the people who can’t look out for themselves.. I just think that’s common sense.”
But ruled himself out of ever entering the political arena:
“Oh, God, no. I wish I had the fleetness of thought and the brilliance to be good enough to go into politics, but I suspect I don’t.” When the journalist pointed out that people would listen to him, he replied “But what I would be saying? What gibberish would I be coming out with? I draw your attention to the other side of the Atlantic, where I think someone thought that was what was going to happen.”
