A monster tribute to Doctor Who is currently in the making as Barton scouts prepare to stage their annual bonfire and fireworks display.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the legendary sci-fi series they will be conjuring up a giant Doctor Who-themed bonfire and exterminating around £6,500 worth of dazzling fireworks on Saturday, November 2.
“We usually choose a topical theme – last year was the Olympics – and this year it’s Doctor Who because of the anniversary in November,” said scout leader and bonfire organiser Samantha Ireland.
The choice sparked interest from children’s television stars Dick and Dom who will be filming at the venue on the day. They, and an expected crowd of around 5,000 people, will see a guy representing the fourth incarnation of The Doctor, played by Tom Baker, go up in flames.
“We chose Tom Baker because he is the most recognisable with his long scarf and hat,” explained Samantha.
He will sit atop a 20ft-high bonfire construction of Daleks and the Tardis which will be built by a team from the scout group and volunteers in the week before the event.
