Deep Breath scored an Audience Appreciation Index score of 82, slightly down on the 83 recorded for The Time of the Doctor, the Matt Smith finale being one of the lowest scores of the entire Matt Smith era alongside A Christmas Carol (also 83).
A figure as low as 82 wasn’t recorded during the entirety of Matt Smith’s era, Victory of the Daleks and Amy’s Choice scoring lowest amongst regular series episodes with 84. The two specials mentioned above hitting the era low of 83.
Indeed, you have to go back to the much maligned Love & Monsters (June 2006) during Series 2 to find a score as low, the episode receiving an Audience Appreciation of 76.
The only other episodes to score as low at 82 are all from Series 1: Rose (81), The End of the World (79), The Unquiet Dead (80), Aliens of London (81), World War Three (82) and Boom Town (82),
The highest Audience Appreciation score for a series opener was 89 for last series’ Asylum of the Daleks, also by Steven Moffat.
The average score for all shows across the BBC is however also 82.
