AxisVFX meanwhile, a Bristol and Glasgow-based visual effects studio, have revealed they have worked on the forthcoming Christmas special The Husbands of River Song.
AxisVFX have completed more than 120 shots for the episode, renewing a collaboration with director Douglas Mackinnon and writer Steven Moffat, alongside executive producer Brian Minchin and producer Nikki Wilson. AxisVFX co-owner and VFX Supervisor Grant Hewlett says:
“It’s a pleasure and an honor to work with Douglas, Brian, Nikki and Steven again on Doctor Who. It’s a wonderful episode packed with action and spectacle.”
Completed across both of Axis’ UK studios, the team, led by Hewlett and fellow VFX supervisor Stuart Aitken, worked closely with Mackinnon and Wilson to create the visual effects required, including alien planets, giant robots and galactic star-liners. Hewlett says it’s a huge honour to work again on the show:
“Whilst I was on-set liaising with Douglas throughout the shoot, Stuart worked in parallel, supervising the build of digital assets, creation of concept art and the production of early previz. We engage a huge amount of technical ability, hardware and software to complete the work,” says Hewlett. “But what actually matters is collaboration, listening and bang for buck. It’s a huge honor to contribute again to this iconic sci-fi classic.”
The Husbands of River Song airs on Christmas Day at 5.15pm on BBC One at at 9pm on BBC America.
