Comedian Richard Ayoade is still in the frame as one of the leading contenders to replace Peter Capaldi as the next Doctor, sources in the national press claim.

Speaking to a leading tabloid, an alleged unnamed source within the BBC states that Ayoade has impressed bosses at the Beeb:
“Richard is very highly thought of in the industry and is well liked. Beeb bosses have discussed him as an option to replace Peter as they think he would bring something different to the role. The final decision is still some way off and it’s all to play for. He’s very much seen as a Channel 4 poster boy so tempting him away would be something of a coup.”
Ayoade, most known from his role as Maurice Moss in sitcom The IT Crowd, would be the first black actor to win the role should he be successful.
Other recent names believed to be in contendership include Luke Treadaway and Sacha Dhawan alongside Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who has seemingly ruled herself out of the running. Speaking on Waller-Bridge’s contendership, the same source did not rule out the possibility however:
“There are still a few names in the mix, and Phoebe is one of them. Although, privately she has been telling friends that she has not been offered the job.”
Doctor Who returns this Saturday, with Peter Capaldi still very much in the role, at 7:45pm on BBC One.
