DWW is saddened to learn of the passing of actor Bernard Kay over the Christmas period at the age of 86.
Born in Bolton, Kay’s early career first took him toward journalism and work for the Bolton Evening News and Manchester Guardian before conscription in 1946 led to him to taking up acting while serving in the army.
After winning a scholarship to the Old Vic, Kay turned professional in 1950 and was a regular face on TV programmes as diverse as The Champions, Emmerdale, A Very British Coup, Z-Cars, Foyle’s War, Zorro and many, many more, not to mention a wide range of film roles, notably Doctor Zhivago (1965), Witchfinder General (1968) and Sinbad (1977), again amongst many others.
To Doctor Who fans however, Bernard Kay is well remembered for his four roles during the Classic era of the show: Caldwell in 1971’s Colony in Space, Crossland in 1967’s The Faceless Ones, Carl Tyler in 1964’s The Dalek Invasion of Earth and a much noted performance as Saladin alongside Julian Glover’s Richard in 1965’s The Crusade.
