Steven Moffat has been dropping hints about what we can expect from this year’s Christmas Special, plus teasing that the impending regeneration will be “different” this time.
Speaking to Samira Ahmed at the Hay Festival, the Moff says that the series will end on an unexpected note and the forthcoming regeneration is something he’s actively been working on with incoming head honcho Chris Chibnall
“You all know that the mighty Peter Capaldi will be bowing out but we’re gonna do it slightly differently this time and I’ve been working with Chris about how we do the change over in a new way. I’m excited by it, I think it’s gonna work well… Every regeneration’s different but we are playing it slightly differently this time. I think we’ve got a good idea.”
The Christmas Special is widely expected to see Peter Capaldi regenerate into the next Doctor at it’s conclusion or even during the events of the special. Though with Series 10 seemingly set to end on a cliffhanger there is speculation that the Doctor’s death may feature early in the Christmas episode or be the focus of the show.
Recent rumours also suggest a return for the Doctor’s first incarnation, to be played by David Bradley, perhaps as a Watcher type character to aid the regeneration, a “flash before the eyes” or a manifestation of the dying Doctor’s subconscious.
The 2017 Christmas special will air this coming Christmas Day on BBC One and BBC America. Doctor Who returns this coming Saturday with The Empress of Mars, airing at 7:15pm on BBC One and 8/9c on BBC America.
