New details of Neil Gaiman’s forthcoming Nothing O’Clock have been revealed and the Doctor might just be facing his deadliest threat yet, an alien Margaret Thatcher!
The year is 1984 and the Kin, an ancient alien enemy of the Time Lords, have adopted the then PM’s persona and have persuaded British homeowners to sell their houses at huge profits in an effort to rid the planet of human beings, replacing the population with their fellow Kin. Nell Gaiman believes there may be nothing quite as scary as Thatcher crossed with a classic Who villain
“I wanted to see if I can scare people. I got to do lots of really interesting things including have the voice of the late Margaret Thatcher. She’s there in 1984 and it was really a strange discovery that actually there’s nothing quite as scary as a classic Doctor Who villain with Margaret Thatcher’s speech patterns.”
It wouldn’t be the first time Doctor Who has satirised the Thatcher era, The Happiness Patrol‘s Helen A being a thinly veiled caricature of the PM amongst other incidence during the McCoy era and Gaiman certainly thought his novel might be worthy of screen adaptation
“There was definitely part of me who went, ‘You know, wouldn’t it be fun to put this on screen? Wouldn’t this be fun to see if I can actually make people wee themselves with terror in real life?‘“
We’re sure somewhere Andrew Cartmel is smiling.
Nothing O’Clock will be published in ebook form this coming Thursday by Penguin, a physical hard copy of all eleven stories in the series will follow.
