TV Industry trade union BECTU has threatened to derail ongoing production of top BBC and ITV dramas, including Doctor Who, as a pay dispute rumbles on.
BECTU has called upon production units behind some of Britain’s top shows, including Call the Midwife and Doctor Who to raise the day rate for freelance grips from £250 to £300, or risk the union causing disruption to their shooting schedules.
Grips are an essential part of production: a specialist camera grade responsible for the building, operation and supervision of equipment to mount and support cameras, and to achieve camera movements efficiently and safely.
BBC in-house dramas Silent Witness and Doctor Who have been targeted alongside ITV’s Mr Selfridge and Neal Street Productions drama Call the Midwife as potential shows that could be disrupted.
BECTU was founded in 1991 with the merger of the Association of Cinematograph Television and Allied Technicians (ACTT) and the Broadcasting and Entertainment Trades Alliance (BETA), it currently has around 25,000 members.
