The Great Time War has raged for centuries, ravaging the universe. Scores of human colony planets are now overrun by Dalek occupation forces. The Time War is an event that has shaped the very fabric of Doctor Who in the 21st century, for the whole RTD years it appeared that it’s ripples touched almost every part of the show, from the brooding guilt of the Eccleston Doctor to the motivations of the Master, it began and it closed an era of the show. Yet Davies was hesitant to depict the conflict, believing that a war conducted in so many times streams, realities and planes of existence could never be fully shown on television.
The 50th anniversary of the show changed much of that, the result of the war washed away and a whole new incarnation controversially created to fight for Gallifrey. We saw Eight fall on Karn and become a warrior, our new Nine wielding a gun and deploying “The Moment” when the time came. Yet there is a whole chapter of Doctor Who missing - the life of the War Doctor, a story never to be told… Till now!
Set during the Time War, Engines of War tells a tale of the Doctor at war as the defender of Gallifrey and features exactly what you’d expect from such a novel - Daleks, Time Lords, carnage and a whole new companion.
Author George Mann said he was “honoured” to have been tasked with bringing John Hurt’s Doctor to the page, indicating that the adventure would be a personal one for this most elusive of Doctors:
