Filming for Doctor Who‘s annual Christmas special is well underway with the first location photos and casting rumours starting to do the rounds, including the return of a familiar face.
Directed by Paul Wilmshurst and written by Steven Moffat, the episode is rumoured to feature the departure of Clara Oswald actress Jenna Coleman and began shooting earlier this month.

Nick Frost meanwhile has been seen in Cardiff with Strax actor Dan Starkey, prompting speculation that the frequent Simon Pegg collaborator has been cast in the special, some sources suggesting in the role of “Santa Claus.”
Photographs from location filming indicate a Victorian mansion of some kind involved, potentially tying into the return of Strax.

The location featured is Vaendre Hall, built for a superwealthy coal and shipping family when Cardiff was the centre of the Victorian coal trade.
There were also some reports of location filming in Scotland, said to have been confirmed by security on site

And also indications that the episode will, at least partially, have scenes set in the present day with reports of filming at a private residence and cars being covered in fake snow!

The Doctor Who Christmas Special will, surprisingly, be broadcast on December 25, 2014 and will star Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman.
