Hayley Atwell, one of the names frequently mentioned in relation to becoming the next Doctor, has ruled herself out of the running for the role.
Speaking at Heroes and Villains Fanfest in London, Atwell, best known for her role as Peggy Carter in the Marvel franchise, said:
“I don’t want to play it. No. It’s just not my thing, but I really respect it. I’m a big fan of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, though. She plays the lead in Fleabag. There were talks of her being the next Doctor, and she’s so funny and eccentric and unique, she’d be great. I can’t really see anyone other than her playing it.”
I’m pretty upset about this.
I just want a female incarnation to shut everyone up.
And seeming as Newman, the original creator himself, wanted to bring in a female lead before the show went off air it would be silly to ignore his wishes. Better late than never.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, favoured by both Atwell and some bookmakers, has also seemingly ruled herself out of the running, saying, earlier this month:
“I am not going to be the first female Doctor, not that I know of”
Other names touted as possible replacements for Peter Capaldi include Luke Treadaway, Sacha Dhawan and Richard Ayoade

Hayley would be fantastic… has a good strong fan base and been in a wide variety of roles . Would… https://t.co/ra79bomBGY

I like Atwell, but was she ever really being suggested to play the Doctor?

Good. As much as I like her and miss her as Agent Carter, the Doctor is a man and should not change gender as if it were like changing a coat.

I’d like to see a woman do it once.
And my preferred choice is Hayley, because A) she actually wants it, so she must actually have some idea of what it entails and is willing to ride on that and B) it would be very different from any incarnation of the Doctor.
And I’m perfectly fine with her waiting a few more years before she actually does it, if she were to ever do it.
She’s good at pulling out humour and smiles, and I’ll assume she knows her DW stuff.
If she never got it, will, okay, then. But if there was going to be ONE female Doctor, Hayley gets my vote of confidence.

Your mobile layout makes it seem like the quote from the comments is attributed to her, you might want to look at that.

I still don’t understand the craze to change a main character’s gender. It has never happened in the history of literature or cinema. I know this because every time I ask the question, no one can tell me.
