The IDW range of Doctor Who comics will come to an end this Christmas with the Doctor Who Special 2013 and The Girl Who Loved Doctor Who.
Written by Paul Cornell with art by Jimmy Broxton, the 2013 Special will feature a very special tale - The Doctor travelling into our own universe where Doctor Who is a television series starring Matt Smith!
Cornell, who has a long history with the show from the fanzines of the late 1980s/early 1990s and his first novel Timewyrm Revelation in 1991 to his highly acclaimed TV episodes Fathers Day and Human Nature, states:
“It’s called “The Girl Who Loved Doctor Who,” and it’s about Matt Smith’s Doctor landing in the real world, finding out his adventures are all on DVD, going to a “Doctor Who” convention, and meeting Matt Smith! But there’s peril as well, of course. And some important stuff about what the show meant to me, and to, I guess, a lot of other fans… It’s my anniversary celebration of the series that’s formed the central thread of my career, the reason I started writing, the reason I’ve got to where I am. I realised a few months ago that I had one last Who tale left to tell, and this is it, my farewell to the 11th Doctor, to be released just when he leaves us, in Christmas week. It’s the story of the Doctor landing in our world, the real world, finding himself to be a well known fictional character and encountering, well, lots of things, but notably Matt Smith. I hope it reads like an episode. It’s a 40 page story, and the issue is even bigger than that, including back-up strips I’m not yet able to mention.”
IDW’s license to produce Doctor Who comics was not renewed and speculation has begun as to who did indeed win the license, with the BBC remaining mute on the subject. The general consensus is that Titan Comics in the UK will be the beneficiary, while it is rumoured Panini placed a bid, possibly leading to some of the rumours surrounding the future of Doctor Who Magazine (which will remain with Panini throughout 2014).
The Doctor Who Special 2013 will be released Christmas week, retailing at $7.99.
