As editor, I occasionally disagree with the opinion but recognise the value of them and have no hesitation in allowing them..

Yet occasionally I also feel I must respond.

I’ve been watching Doctor Who since i was a child, first coming to the series in 1992 during the BBC’s repeat run of The Sea Devils. Through the dark times of the 1990s to the current worldwide phenomenon, I’ve always tried to remain positive about the show. Love & Monsters was difficult, but I persisted.

I’ve never been one of the anti-Moffat crowd, if anything I prefer his run as producer to that of Russell T. Davies (just my opinion, that’s another column) and admittedly I’ve found everything from the second half of the last series to be poor compared to what has proceeded it, yet that optimism for Series 8 remains.

With a promise of a new direction for the show, an uninterrupted run, a new lead and the baggage of the final Smith months left behind, the show has a fine opportunity to refresh itself just as it so often has in the past. Steven Moffat has proven time and again the ability to produce some fantastic pieces of television, not only during his own era but equally during the RTD era and outside of the show on Sherlock. Those truly great episodes haven’t reared their head since Angels in Manhattan, but the opportunity is there with new scenarios and a new direction. But key to that success will be Peter Capaldi.. and how can one doubt his pedigree?

This is the man who speaks openly of his love for The Web Planet, this is the man who wrote fan letters aged 6, who was involved with the fan club and dreamed of these days for nearly 50 years. But more than that, this is the man who gave a virtuoso performance in Torchwood: Children of Earth as John Frobisher, the performance that made Children of Earth the best production to ever enter the wider Doctor Who canon (and one of the best slices of any kind of Who material), the man who won widespread acclaim for his powerful and iconic performance as Malcolm Tucker, the man widely regarded as one of Britain’s finest actors, smoothly transitioning from the comic to the tragic, from the powerful to the tender… and don’t forget to watch The Hour. His range is immense and so is his talent, hence his BAFTA and Oscar for directing.

As Steven Moffat has said, we’ve had two similar Doctors that have defined an era, it’s time to move on. A different dynamic, an older and more irritable Doctor, short of temper… just how it was in the beginning.

Peter Capaldi won’t be a good Doctor, he’ll be a fantastic Doctor.
