Da Vinci’s Demons star Tom Riley has been cast in an episode of Series 8 penned by Mark Gatiss.
Riley, who has also starred in the likes of Lewis, St Trinian’s 2 and Poirot will play an as yet undisclosed role in the forthcoming series.
Mark Gatiss revealed late last month that he has been commissioned to write two episodes of the show, but stated that they may not both be produced as part of the forthcoming series.
It is unlikely however that either episode will feature a visit to Gallifrey.
Speaking in the Radio Times, the Sherlock showrunner urged caution with the Doctor’s home planet:
“Every time you go back to Gallifrey, it starts to make the Time Lords a bit too domesticated, I know that’s why Russell T Davies came up with the whole idea of the Doctor being the last one because eventually if you see them so often they become a bit like a bunch of MPs, whereas if you talk about them as this amazing, powerful force, they’re much more exciting.”
And asked if he would like write a Gallifrey episode himself, Gatiss was somewhat enigmatic:
“I don’t know if I would want to do one. I think the way the Time Lords were represented in The End of Time and The Day of the Doctor was very exciting because we’re seeing them in a crisis and they’re trying to come up with different ways of saving themselves. But I suppose if the Doctor ever does find Gallifrey again, then we might find out more. Who knows…”
Time will tell it, it always does!
Doctor Who Series 8 is scheduled for broadcast later this year on BBC One.
