Big Finish productions have announced two new additions to their ever growing range of New and Missing Adventures dramatisations - Damaged Goods and The Well Mannered War.
Damaged Goods, penned by Russell T. Davies in 1996 was one of the most controversial New Adventures of the entire range and will be adapted as a full cast two hour presentation for release in August of 2015 starring Sylvester McCoy as the Doctor. The novel was RTD’s first foray into professional Doctor Who fandom, coming 8 years before his role as producer on the New Series. The new production will be adapted by Jonathan Morris and Davies revealed his enthusiasm for the project to Big Finish:
“I’ve always been a huge fan of Big Finish, since long before I took the big chair on Doctor Who. And long after! So when they asked if they could adapt Damaged Goods… well, to be honest, I asked them what took so long! Jonny has done the most brilliant job, adapting the novel - there’s lots of fascinating new stuff, while staying very true and faithful to the original story. At last, Mrs Jericho lives! And that other Tyler family, the original Tylers, Bev and her mum Winnie, with little Gabriel and his mysterious gift. In fact, all the inhabitants of Red Hamlets are finding their voices, after all this time. Ever since that terrible bargain was struck by Bev’s mum, on that dark Christmas Eve, long ago”
Originally released in October of 1996, Dave Owen reviewed the original Virgin Publishing book in Doctor Who Magazine 243:
“Author Russell T Davies is a welcome new addition to Doctor Who fiction, bringing a lucid, matter-of-fact style of storytelling that has more in common with Stephen Gallagher‘s modern horror novels than Irvine Welsh‘s stylised fables… Purists might argue that a book full of sex, drugs and squalor can’t really be Doctor Who, but they would be forgetting that the essence of the series and those like it is in portraying ordinary people’s reactions to the unprecedented. It’s done so brilliantly here that, much as I abhor scores, rankings and superlatives, I’ll admit that Damaged Goods is currently my favourite New Adventure.”
Big Finish will also be producing the third of Gareth Roberts Season 17 Missing Adventures - The Well Mannered War, staring Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, Lalla Ward as Romana, and John Leeson as K9.
The fourth Doctor, Romana & K-9 arrive on the planet Trangus at a crucial time in it’s history. A war is looming with the Chelonian Empire and political chaos threatens the fabric of society on Trangus.
The Well Mannered War is also set for release in August of 2015 and will be adapted by John Dorney.
Damaged Goods and The Well Mannered War will be available as vanilla two-disc editions, and also together in a deluxe Limited Collectors Edition, which features lavish illustrations and professional portrait photography of the cast. Pre-orders are now available.
