Doctor Who has once again been nominated for the best drama at ITV’s National Television Awards, but there is no nomination for Peter Capaldi in the top drama performance category.
Capaldi’s omission marks the first time the lead actor in the series hasn’t featured amongst the nominations since the show returned in 2005, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith all winning the award and the show winning each year it was nominated during the RTD era and twice more during Matt’s time on the show.
This year’s contenders in the category are Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch (such nominations are law), Happy Valley’s Sarah Lancashire, Sheridan Smith is nominated for Cilla and Dame Maggie Smith for ITV’s Downton Abbey.
Doctor Who is nominated against Sherlock, Downton Abbey and Cilla for the best drama award and Benedict Cumberbatch at least will be particularly keen to beat Downton Abbey, once describing the show as “f*****g atrocious.”
Other highlights include nominations for Benidorm in the best comedy category, last year’s winner For the Love of Dogs getting the nod as best factual programme, the Geordie Shore and Celebrity Juice being nominated alongside Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead in the multichannel category and the fruitless continuation of best entertainment presenter category, won every year by Ant and Dec!
The National Television Awards 2015 will take place at the o2 Arena on January 21, 2015
