Former Producer Russell T. Davies has given his thoughts on Peter Capaldi, the BBC potentially cancelling Doctor Who and more in a new interview with the Radio Times.
Speaking to Ben Dowell, RTD admitted regret he hadn’t cast Capadi himself:
“I know Peter Capaldi. He did a Doctor Who with us and he did a brilliant Torchwood and when they cast him I was just envious. I just thought: so brilliant. Why didn’t I think of that? Brilliant.”
And the former showrunner believes that the show is now too big for the BBC to ever cancel again:
“It’s now impossible for it to ever be axed, it’s certainly heading that way. Could you imagine if it was axed now? There would be uproar in the streets. Twitter would be set on fire. Who would have thought? If you look at the last ten years: ten years of rock solid ratings! It’s bizarre to an old-school Doctor Who fan like me; it’s success continues to be extraordinary.”
And RTD believes that history will forever repeat, with today’s fans becoming the RTDs and Steven Moffats of tomorrow:
“Also, there is a current generation who will keep it alive in a generation’s time. As long as there’s an audience, that audience will grow up loving it and want to make their own and it’s self-perpetuating.”
Russell’s latest endeavours Cucumber and Banana will be shown on Channel 4, E4 and 4oD later this month.
