The big talking point coming out of Dark Water was certainly the return of the Doctor’s arch-nemesis The Master, now known in their female form as The Mistress or Missy for short. What did our readers think of the return? Here’s a selection of what has already been an intense debate:
“Everyone kicking off about this is male, and mostly above a certain age. One guy on a forum called it castration, which is utter balls, and with some other comments in the same post - that speaks volumes about how they see women. I personally think it was a brave new twist on an old character. It didn’t have to be the Rani, and the ‘soap bitch’ persona of that character doesn’t fit with Missy. Some people seem determined to hate on the new show because Davros, Anti-Man, and the Sea Devils aren’t in it every week. I say Doctor Who depends on change, and all power to Moffat for doing something new with a moustache twiddling villain that everyone’s struggled to do much new with over the years.” - Martin Ruddock
“The Rani is being played by a new actress in the audio adventures and the reviews say that she has been brilliant in the role and The Master is being played by a actor the problem is not a sexist problem, the problem is if a character is played by males then it should stay as a male just like The Doctor. The Master cannot and will not change sex now unless in the next part its revealed that she lied and made out to be the master to confuse The Doctor and is in fact The Rani then it would make sense as she is more evil then The Master and would do such a thing however on the other hand she is The Master then I think like all the other mistakes that has happened in this series since it came back will not be accepted by fans who have loved the series since it first started in 1963. Barry Letts will be turning in his grave and I would love to hear Terrance Dicks thoughts as they created this character knowing them they hated everything that has been done in this new series since 2005. I’m sorry but I have nothing against Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman as I think they are brilliant but all these writers and RTD and Moffat have no idea what Doctor Who is all about and should not do anything to change the characters and concepts of this show. I would hate to think if Star Trek came back with James T Kirk as a female it would not be accepted and that is why The Master changing his sex will never be accepted, only by the new fans who have only just watch the new version will accept it” - David Cole
