Former producer Russell T. Davies has spoken out this past week on a variety of issues surrounding his time on the show, including the accusation he made the show too much like a soap opera.
Speaking on Toby Hadoke’s Who’s Round, the former producer spoke on a range of topics including the 1996 TV Movie With the Pertwee Logo and the allegation that his era had become “too soapy”, the half-human element to the McGann movie however is something Davies doesn’t believe we can ignore:
“I don’t like the half-human thing. He certainly isn’t half-human, but it’s less interesting to say it simply doesn’t count. I always wanted to put in a line where someone says to the Doctor ‘are you human?’ and the Doctor says ‘no, but I was once in 1999. It was a 24 hour bunk.’ Part of the reason I never put that in was it was a bit too self-referential but also I thought I’m spoiling the TV movie if I do that. In that time, like it or not, the Doctor was half human. Everything in that story says he was half human, so you can’t not count it. I don’t think we can ignore it.”
RTD also commented on fans who feel the show became like a soap opera during his era:
“I absolutely think they are wrong. I can understand where it is coming from, but it doesn’t mean I like where it’s coming from. You are looking at a major character in his own show that’s on for 50 years and you’re denying him a full life. You can’t do that. Plus, I have to say, what a load of fuss about nonsense! If you added all the kisses and the love lines I think you’d have about 40-seconds of material! Seriously, think about it. It’s not much, it’s tiny. And it very rarely changed the direction of a story. You have to let it move on.”
