Steven Moffat has spoken out on a number of topics this past week at the Hey Festival.
Speking on the return of the show in 2005 under Russell T. Davies, Moffat was highly complimentary of his predecessor:
“What Russell did so right was he didn’t change it at all except in so far as it had to fit into modern television. It was unsentimental. Russell thought, ‘I am planning it for Saturday night and want a family audience’, he also has a profound view of TV and he seems to watch several channels at once. He knows exactly how to fit ‘Doctor Who’ into the modern landscape.”
Moffat has also revealed the absolutely shocking fact that BBC bosses came close to cancelling the show at the end of the Tennant era:
“I think there were plans maybe to consider ending it, the idea that Doctor Who could go on at all in the absence of David was a huge question. It was Russell T Davies saying, ‘You are not allowed to end it! [That saved it]”
And on Series 8, there are definitely changes in store:
“We haven’t made much of change to Doctor Who since it came back in 2005. It’s been the same show. It’s maybe amped some things up and lowered some other things, but it’s basically the same. I just felt it needs to be a bit more different now. It’s needs to be surprising again!”
Moffat was determined not to cast a “handsome, yet quirky, young man with entertaining hair”:
“It would have just exposed the formula, we’d have found somebody great and people would have liked him, but the show would have just become that little bit more ordinary.”
