Greetings Illustrious Readers,
In two weeks time Doctor Who fans will be converging upon the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Ronkonkoma, Long Island for the Long Island Doctor Who Convention. This is the first Doctor Who Convention in the New York area in over twenty years. During the weekend of November 8th-10th showrunner Ken Deep has a monumentally brilliant event planned event for everyone attending.
For those who may not know, Ken Deep has been a long-time member of the New York Doctor Who community, beginning with the Gallifreyan Embassy in 1985. The Gallifreyan Embassy, a Doctor Who fan community has been going strong since their founding and is part of my own first experiences with Doctor Who in 1987. Additionally, Ken Deep has been the host of the #1 Doctor Who podcast, Doctor Who Podshock alongside Gallifreyan Embassy Founder Louis Trapani. Recently Ken has begun a new podcasting venture, Doctor Who: An Occasional Podcast with his Podshock host James Naughton. Ken heads up a marvelous team of leaders in the Doctor Who fan community who have all organized what will be, I am sure, an unforgettable weekend of all things Doctor Who.
Firstly, the guest list just keeps growing! The guests headlining the event is amazing:
Waris Hussein: Director of the first Doctor Who story, “An Unearthly Child,” and the missing classic “Marco Polo,” plus he is one of the subjects for the upcoming movie “An Adventure in Time and Space,” written by Mark Gatiss, which details the early days of Doctor Who.
Sylvestor McCoy: The 7th Doctor and star of The Hobbit
Frazier Hines: Jamie McCrimmon companion of the 2nd Doctor
Daphne Ashbrook: Dr. Grace Holloway companion of the 8th Doctor
Ian McNeice: portrays Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the current series of Doctor Who
Simon Fisher-Becker: portrays Intergalactic Marketeer Dorium Maldovar in the current series of Doctor Who
Chase Masterson: played opposite Tom Baker in Big Finish’s “Doctor Who: Night of the Stormcrow” and opposite Sylvester McCoy in Big Finish’s “The Shadow Heart,” after which her character, Vienna, was given her own series. Plus portrayed Dabo girl, Leeta, on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Many fans are undoubtedly looking forward to interacting with these wonderful guests, especially if you bought the additional tickets to dine with them at the special banquet functions. However, the guests are not the only facet which drives this convention. At the core of this con is it’s programming schedule, which has an abundant amount of programs to choose from.
Some highlights will be of course the Q&A sessions with all of the guests, which should have maximum attendance unto themselves. But live commentary of An Unearthly Child & the reconstruction of Marco Polo with Waris Hussein should not be missed! Additionally live commentary of Evil of the Daleks with Frazer Hines should be another stellar program, alongside Daphne Ashbrook in concert, The Inside Scoop on the 50th Anniversary and a live performance of the Post Meridian Radio Players—Doctor Who: Starship of Madness.
This performance of Doctor Who: Starship of Madness is a treat not only for Doctor Who fans but fans of H.P. Lovecraft as well. My wife and I recently saw publication of our collection of Lovecraftian Fiction, The Friendly Horror and Other Weird Tales, and can safely say we are HUGE Lovecraft fans, perhaps on equal par with our Doctor Who fandom. This live performance of Starship of Madness will be a very big highlight of our Long Island Doctor Who Convention experience.
