The BBC have revealed a pair of major returns for Series 9 of Doctor Who, including a character already presumed dead within the show… read on at your own risk!

Ingrid Oliver, better known as Osgood, is to return to the show, despite claims from producer Steven Moffat that the character in her human form was indeed dead. Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine last year, The Moff said:

“If that had been a Zygon, she wouldn’t have been killed so easily. Dead, I’m afraid.”

“Osgood” was believed to have been obliterated by Missy/The Master during the events of Death in Heaven while fan theories speculated that may in fact have been a Zygon duplicate, created following the events of The Day of the Doctor. Whether the return of Osgood marks a change of heart on the part of Moffat or a potential Zygon duplicate that can survive the death of the original template remains to be seen. The Showrunner offered little insight into the nature of her return, saying:

“Osgood is back, fresh from her recent murder at the end of last series. We recently confirmed that Osgood was definitely dead and not returning – but in a show about time travel, anything can happen. The brilliant Ingrid Oliver is back in action. This time though, can the Doctor trust his number one fan?”

Ingrid meanwhile is delighted to be returning to the series:

“As every actor who’s worked on Doctor Who will tell you, there’s always the secret hope you’ll get the call asking you to come back. To actually receive that call is both unexpected and brilliant. The word ‘honor’ gets banded about a lot, but it really is, it’s an honor. Especially because I was so sure Osgood was a goner after the last series!”

The two part story, co-starring Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, is written by Peter Harness, who also wrote the well received Series 8 episode Kill the Moon, both will be directed by Daniel Nettheim. The story will air as episodes 7 and 8 of Series 9.
