Doctor Who executive producer Steven Moffat has once again gone on record to say that he is open to the idea of a return for the character of River Song - so long as it’s for the right story… going on to reveal even Russell T. Davies has asked for her to be brought back!
Speaking to the BAFTA tenth anniversary event earlier this month, Moffat reveals how he worries about giving the Doctor friends who stay too long:
“It entirely depends on whether we’ve got a good story. It’s certainly not ruled out. I have a sort of worry about keeping anybody around in the Doctor’s life for too long. Because he’s the Man who Leaves. He’s the man who outlives everybody: that’s his story. In the end it’s the boy in his box, and he’s alone. In the end if we had a great story, we’d do it.”
Moffat also reveals that former showrunner and head honcho Russell T. Davies asked him to bring back the character, played in the series by Alex Kingston
“I mentioned in passing to Russell that we were probably done with River. He said, ‘You can’t be done with River! No, no, no. Capaldi and Kingston, it’s a sex storm!’ So if you see an episode called Sex Storm by Russell T Davies in his post-Cucumber years… [there will be] lots of editing from me saying ‘We really can’t do that, you’ve forgotten which show this is….’”
Also at the event, Steven talked a little about his future post-Doctor Who, revealing he doesn’t have any plans beyond his current role on the show and his role alongside Mark Gatiss on Sherlock:
“I keep signing on for another year all the time. I haven’t really figured out what I’m going to do after this. At some point the lure of doing something else that isn’t either of those shows will be too strong – I’ll have to [bid farewell]”
But Moffat, who is often the subject of press intrigue and highly charged fan discussion, revealed sometimes he wishes his role wasn’t quite so high profile:
“There are moments – and this is the most ungrateful remark you’re ever gonna hear from a white straight man, this is the supremacy of privilege here – I sometimes wish everything wasn’t so high profile all the time.”
Steven Moffat has allegedly already signed on for the tenth series of Doctor Who to air in 2016 alongside his fourth series of Sherlock. Series nine of Doctor Who will broadcast this coming fall/autumn with Christmas specials for both shows airing this holiday season.

I feel like their timelines are a bit more complicated then just back to front…. Like in the angels take Manhattan episode, they had already been married and known eachother for quite a while. So who knows, it could happen

No, god please, NO! Her story is done, it worked with Eleven, but that’s it, it’s done. Twelve’s story is with Clara and thank god Moffat sees that too. When the time does come that Twelve loses Clara, which will be heartbreaking for him, I really hope he moves forward. No past companions, like River, coming back. Someone completely new would be better.

There has been enough River Song for a while.
I just miss the writing of the earlier series. The Library and Blink were clever. The Fireplace was better than some movie scripts.
Hes been in charge for a few years now. Lets have a change. We dont want another jnt,going on for too many years.
